Medellín is the capital of the Antioquia Department, located in the Northwest of Colombia and which accounts 12% of the Colombian population and contributes 15% of gross domestic product. Geographic area of high and steep mountain ranges. The city is the geographical center of the Valley of Aburrá, which is formed by two branches of the Cordillera Central, being born in the Alto de San Miguel. The Valley is a slope that descends from 1800 to 1400 meters above the sea level crossed by the Medellín River that stretches South – North and has an approximate length of 70 kilometers. To the interior of the Valley are Cerro El Volador and Nutibara. In those branches of the cordillera there are Pan de Azúcar, the Picacho and elevations until of 3,000 meters of height on the sea level as the Hill of the Father Amaya. Medellin has a humidity relative average annual: 87% day and 54% night, pressure atmospheric 1012 millibars and precipitation average annual 200 cm.
The municipality of Medellin occupies an area of 376.22 square kilometers and is formed by his headboard with 271 neighborhoods and the districts of Santa Elena and San Antonio de Prado, San Cristóbal, Altavista and bordered by the municipalities of San Jerónimo, Copacabana, Bello, Guarne, Rionegro, El Retiro, Envigado, Itagüí, La Estrella, Heliconia, Angelopolis and Ebéjico. The Metropolitan Area brings together 9 municipalities and has 3.204.471 inhabitants, of which 2.230.000 live in the city of Medellin. The temperature average of the city is of 24 degrees centigrade providing a pleasant and invariably weather during all the year.
Medellin has received different names through history: San Lorenzo de Aburrá, Aburrá the Yamesies, Valle de San Bartolomé, Ana, Villa de la Candelaria of Medellín and Medellín, whose original name is derived from the word “Metelo”, which corresponds to the founder of Medellín in Extremadura in Spain. The capital Antioquia has received also different appellations as Capital of the Mountain, City of the eternal spring, City of the flowers, Capital of Orchids, the Bella Villa, Cup of Silver, and City of Congresses and Conventions.
